Studio monitors are not designed to make your music sound pretty, they are designed to be honest. They are engineered with a flat response, so as to produce an accurate reproduction of the recorded sound, especially at close range. Hi-fi speakers typically have a preset (or user selectable) EQ curve that colours the sound. Mixing using hi-fi speakers often results in an inaccurate perception of the mix. As a consequence, if the mixdown sounds good through the hi-fi speakers, it wont necessarily sound good through anything else.
